About your opportunity

The Strategy and Support Division places people at the centre of everything we do. We work directly with clinicians, researchers, policymakers, and people impacted by cancer to reduce inequities and improve outcomes for all Victorians, now and into the future. As part of the Strategy and Support Division, you will be part of the Supportive Care Team which operates under the Cancer Information and Support Services Unit.

The Counselling service provides telephone support to Victorians affected by cancer. It is staffed by experienced Counsellors who are highly skilled in supporting people with their psychological and emotional needs whilst managing the impacts of a cancer diagnosis. This service aims to compliment the clinical care provided to patients, and our approach is holistic and person-centred.

We are seeking a part-time Counsellor to join our Counselling team in the Strategy and Support Division. Reporting to the Counselling Service Lead, your role is to:

  • Provide telephone-based counselling support to people affected by cancer.
  • Understand and be proficient in best practice therapeutic interventions for people affected by cancer presenting with transient or issue-specific distress.
  • Provide referral to further support as required, including onward referral to internal supportive care services and/or supports offered by external health services and agencies.
  • Effective contribution to the counselling team and participation in program development strategies as required

All about you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Holds a qualification in Counselling, Social Work or Psychology
  • Has post graduate experience in Oncology or related healthcare field
  • Has current registration with a governing body (AHPRA, Australian Counselling Association or Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia)
  • Has a demonstrated ability to respond to the information and support needs of people affected by life limiting illness and demonstrated understanding of the psychological impact of cancer on individuals and families.
  • Is experienced in the delivery of telephone and/or face-to-face counselling interventions including use of behavioural and cognitive coping strategies.
  • Will participate in regular professional development and improvement of clinical knowledge and communication skills.
  • Has advanced communication skills, interpersonal skills and active listening skills, including the ability to develop and maintain working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Has proven organisational and time management skills with the ability to work autonomously and as part of a highly functioning team.
  • Is computer literate, and confident in use of MS Office suite use with customer data-base management experience

  • Salary: $89,299 to $98,632 base salary per annum (pro rata for part-time), commensurate with experience, plus 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading.
